Orange Sunset & Papaya Dreams

orangepalmpapayapool

The pool shimmered like liquid sapphire, but Maya's stomach churned like a blender set to destroy. Jordan's party. THE party. Everyone who mattered would be here, and Maya had spent three hours perfecting her swimsuit choice—this orange bikini that made her feel bold until she actually arrived.

"Hey! You made it!" Jordan materialized, all golden skin and effortless confidence, handing her a paper plate. "Try this. My mom's obsessed with tropical vibes."

Maya stared at the unfamiliar fruit slices. "What's... papaya?"

"Only, like, the best thing ever," Jordan laughed, but not in a mean way. "Just trust me. Unless you're allergic, then definitely don't."

Maya took a bite. Weird. Like melon but... fancy? She nodded enthusiastically anyway because Jordan's expectant face deserved nothing less.

"So, you doing the palm reading thing?" Jordan nodded toward the lounge chairs where a circle had formed around Chloe, who was apparently psychic now. "She predicted Alyssa would fail her math test. AND SHE DID."

Maya's palms went sweaty. Literally. The universe had terrible timing.

"I'll pass," she managed, though part of her was desperate to know what Chloe would say. Your crush will notice you approximately never? You'll spend high school on the sidelines watching everyone else live their best lives?

The sun dipped lower, painting everything in shades of orange and pink. The pool transformed into a mirror for the sky's artistry. Someone cannonballed, sending a splash of water toward Maya's orange flip-flops.

"Maya!" It was Sam—the guy she'd been lowkey obsessing over since September. "You coming in?"

Her heart did that thing where it forgot how to rhythm correctly. "I... I don't know."

"The water's perfect," he grinned, droplets sliding down his collarbone. "Unless you're scared I'll beat you racing to the other side."

Challenge accepted. Maya dropped her papaya plate somewhere—whatever, social suicide later, victory now—and sprinted toward the pool, orange bikini blazing against the blue water like she owned the place.

Sometimes you have to dive in.
