Orange Sunset Fox
Maya's legs burned as she kept running, each step on the cross-country trail feeling heavier than the last. The junior varsity race had ended twenty minutes ago, but she was still out here, pushing through the forest loop behind Oak Creek High. Coach said extra miles would shave off her 5K time, but honestly? She just needed to clear her head.
Jordan had texted her during third period. *U up?* That's it. Two words that had her overthinking everything since Friday's bonfire, when they'd sat on the same log and their shoulders kept touching and neither of them moved away.
Maya stopped near the old creek bend, bending over to catch her breath. That's when she saw it—an actual fox, its russet coat glowing in the late afternoon light. It stood motionless near the edge of the trees, watching her with calm, intelligent eyes. For a moment, time felt suspended, like the world had paused just for this.
Then the fox dipped its head and grabbed something from the grass—half an orange, probably someone's lunch leftover from the trail earlier that day. It carried the fruit like a prize before disappearing into the shadows.
Maya's phone buzzed in her pocket. *Still running?* Jordan's text read. *Coach said you'd be out here.*
She stared at the screen, heart hammering in a way that had nothing to do with her workout. The fox had been wild and fleeting and beautiful—just like this moment with Jordan, just like high school itself. You could spend forever waiting for things to happen, or you could just go for it.
*Yeah,* she typed back, fingers slightly trembling. *You wanna hang out?*
The three bubbles appeared immediately. *Already waiting by your car.*
Maya smiled at the empty patch of woods where the fox had stood, then turned and started running back, faster this time. Whatever happened next—at least she wasn't watching from the sidelines anymore.
