Orange Stains and Palm Promises
Maya's transformation began with a bottle of "Sunset Orange" hair dye she wasn't technically allowed to use. Three hours later, her bathroom looked like a crime scene, and her hair was the color of radioactive Fanta.
"Maya, what did you DO?" Her little brother Leo stood in the doorway, eyes wide.
"I'm finding myself," she said dramatically, which sounded way better than "I panicked before Jordan's party because everyone expects me to be boring predictable Maya who always plays it safe."
The party was at Chloe's house — Chloe, whose Instagram stories looked like a curated dream of teenage perfection. Maya arrived wearing her orange hair like armor, heart doing gymnastics every time someone glanced her way.
"Whoa, Maya!" Jordan actually noticed her. "Love the hair. It's... bold."
Bold. Not "weird" or "what happened." Bold.
She spent the next hour pretending orange hair was totally her vibe, nursing a soda and dodging questions about how long it took. Then she found herself on Chloe's back patio, away from the noise, watching the neighbor's cat stalk something in the shadows.
"Mr. Whiskers is hunting lizards again," Chloe said, appearing beside her. "He's persistent, I'll give him that."
They sat in comfortable silence for a moment. Then Chloe did something unexpected — she reached for Maya's hand, palm up.
"My aunt taught me to read palms," she said, studying Maya's lifeline. "You're going to do something brave this summer. Something that scares you but you need to do anyway."
Maya's throat tightened. "Like what?"
"I don't know. But whatever it is, you won't regret it."
The cat pounced. A lizard scrambled up the nearest palm tree, escaping into the fronds. They both laughed, and for the first time all evening, Maya felt like herself — orange hair, weird anxieties, and all.
"Thanks," she said as they headed back inside.
"For what?"
"For calling it bold."
Chloe grinned. "Honey, bold is just scared dressed up anyway."
Maya touched her orange hair and finally believed it.
