Orange-Stained Courage

Maya's palms were sweating as she clutched the padel racket, the unfamiliar grip feeling foreign in her hands. The popular kids had actually invited her to play after school, and she'd nodded before her brain could process that she'd never touched a racket in her life.

"You good, Maya?" Jake asked, his easy grin making her stomach do that annoying fluttery thing.

"Yeah, totally," she lied, channeling her inner cool. "Just warming up."

Her phone buzzed. Mom: Barnaby escaped again. So sorry.

Barnaby. Her ancient, smelly golden retriever who'd apparently decided today of all days to stage a prison break. Maya scanned the parking lot just as the familiar golden blur came bounding toward the court.

"No, no, no—" she started, but Barnaby was already there.

The dog didn't just run onto the court. He ran directly into Jake's legs, sending him stumbling backward into the sidelines table where someone's orange juice sat, opened and forgotten. The sound of plastic crushing and juice splattering seemed to echo forever.

Silence. The kind where you could hear your own heartbeat.

Maya rushed forward, face burning. "I am SO sorry—"

Jake was orange-stained from chest to knees. But then—he started laughing. Not mean laughing, but the kind where you can't breathe.

"Dude," he gasped, wiping pulp from his chin. "Your dog just absolutely annihilated me."

Barnaby, satisfied with his work, flopped onto the court and began happily licking Jake's shoe.

The other girls were giggling now, but not at her. At the situation. At Jake. At the absolute chaos of it all.

"I can pay for the shirt," Maya started, but Jake waved her off.

"Nah, this was way better than actually playing. You coming back tomorrow?" He grinned, orange pulp in his hair. "Bring your dog."

Maya looked at Barnaby, now snoozing peacefully on the padel court, orange juice drying on the concrete beside him. Something inside her chest loosened.

"Yeah," she said, and for the first time, it wasn't a lie. "I'll be there."
