Orange Soda Renaissance

Maya's palms were sweating—like, actually sweating—as she stood outside Jordan's house. The bass from inside vibrated through the soles of her canvas slip-ons. This was it. The first party of sophomore year, and she was finally invited.

She adjusted her orange beanie, the one her older sister said made her look "aesthetic whatever that means." She'd spent forty minutes on her makeup tonight. Forty minutes she'd never admit to anyone.

Inside, the living room was a chaos of LED strips and too many bodies. Someone handed her a red cup. "Yo, you want?" It was some fruit punch situation. Maya took it, trying to look like she did this every weekend.

"Hey! Orange beanie girl!" It was Jordan, the host, wearing a bucket hat that was definitely too much. "You're in my bio class, right?"

Maya's stomach did something weird. "Yeah, I sit behind you. I mean—adjacent. Behind-ish."

Smooth. Truly spectacular.

Jordan laughed though. "You want to see something weird? My cat stole something crazy earlier."

They ended up in Jordan's bedroom, which was surprisingly normal except for a cardboard sphinx statue in the corner—like, a full-on Egyptian sphinx, meticulously drawn in Sharpie.

"Art project," Jordan explained. "We had to make something representing 'eternal questions.' I chose: why does everything feel like performance art when you're sixteen?"

Maya stared. "That's... actually kind of deep?"

"Right?" Jordan flopped onto the bed. "But the real mystery is my cat."

The cat, a calico with major attitude, was currently batting around a crushed orange soda can.

"That's the third orange soda this week," Jordan sighed. "She's obsessed. I think she's an influencer in the making."

Maya laughed—actually laughed, not her fake polite laugh. "My cat would never. He's too busy judging my life choices from his cat tree."

"What's he judging?" Jordan asked, genuinely curious.

"Everything." Maya paused. "Mostly me trying to be someone I'm not so people will like me."

Jordan sat up. "Same though. This party? I invited like three people actually. The rest just showed up because someone posted about it. Now I'm playing host to fifty randoms while my cat destroys my soda stash."

They looked at each other. Then at the cat, now sitting atop the cardboard sphinx like she owned it.

"You know," Maya said, "the sphinx was supposed to be this guardian with riddles. Maybe the real riddle is just figuring out who you actually are when nobody's watching."

"Okay, that was way more poetic than anything I wrote on that cardboard," Jordan said. "Wanna hang out in here? Away from the chaos?"

Maya grinned, her palms finally dry. "Yeah. Yeah, I do."

Sometimes the best parties aren't the ones you post about. Sometimes they're just you, a weird cat, and someone who gets it.
