Orange Soda & Palm Lights

The orange soda sat warm in my sweating hand, condensation dripping down my fingers like nervous tears. I was sixteen and terrified, standing in the corner of Jessica's backyard while everyone else seemed to know exactly what they were doing.

That's when I saw him—running across the patio like his life depended on it. Tyler, the cross-country star who'd barely acknowledged my existence since sixth grade. He stopped in front of the palm tree, chest heaving, and somehow I was the one he looked at.

"Hey, Chloe, right?"

I nearly choked on my soda. "Yeah. Hi."

His friends were behind him, shouting something about a dare. Something about how someone had called him chicken, how he needed to bear his soul to the first person he saw. My palms started sweating too, even though I had no idea what was happening.

"So," Tyler said, scratching his neck like this was somehow more awkward for him than it was for me. "My friends are being total idiots. They think I won't ask you to dance because—"

"Because what?" I challenged him, finding my voice somewhere between my pounding heart and my third cup of liquid courage.

"Because you're like, actually smart and I'm just good at running, and they think it would be a total bull move for me to—"

"Bull move?" I raised an eyebrow. "That's not even a real phrase, Tyler."

He laughed, and it was this genuine sound that cut through all the party noise and my own insecurity. "You're right. That was dumb. Will you dance with me anyway?"

The orange streetlights flickered overhead as I said yes. And for the first time in my life, I wasn't the quiet girl in the corner. I was just Chloe, dancing with a boy who was just as nervous as I was, both of us figuring out that maybe growing up wasn't about being cool—it was about being brave enough to be awkward together.
