Orange Soda Confidence

Maya stood in the corner of Tyler's backyard party, clutching her plastic cup of orange soda like it was a lifeline. The bottle cap on her head — her dad's old fishing hat, actually — felt ridiculous, but it was her security blanket. Whenever she got nervous, she wore it. Something about the brim creating a little bubble of just-her-space made the crushing social anxiety manageable.

"Nice hat," said someone behind her. Maya turned to see Jordan, the cute junior from her history class, holding a palm leaf-shaped coaster and looking totally un-ironic about it.

"Thanks," Maya managed, her voice doing that embarrassing crack thing it always did when she was nervous. "It's my dad's. I know, I'm a loser."

Jordan laughed, but not in a mean way. "Nah, it's actually kind of iconic. I like that you don't care what people think."

Maya's palm was literally sweating — like, actual droplets. She couldn't tell if Jordan was being genuine or if this was some sort of setup. teenage girl paranoia at its finest.

"I actually care way too much what people think," Maya admitted, surprising herself with her honesty. "This hat is basically a coping mechanism."

Jordan's smile softened. "Honestly? That's low-key relatable. We're all just pretending we know what we're doing out here."

The orange soda in Maya's cup swished as she gestured to the party around them. "You seem like you've got it figured out, though. You're always so... chill."

"That's just because I hide behind palm leaf coasters and pretend I'm aesthetic," Jordan said, holding up the coaster with a self-deprecating grin. "We're all just working with whatever we got."

Something inside Maya's chest loosened. Maybe this was what high school was actually about — not being perfect or fitting into some mold, but finding the people who saw your weird security hats and didn't laugh, but instead showed you their equally ridiculous palm leaf coasters.

"Want to ditch this party?" Maya found herself saying. "There's a spot down the beach where the orange soda tastes better."

Jordan's eyes lit up. "Only if you promise to wear the hat."

"Deal."

As they walked toward the beach, Maya realized she hadn't taken a sip of her soda in twenty minutes. For the first time in forever, her hands weren't shaking. Sometimes the best moments happened when you stopped trying to be cool and just let yourself be awkwardly, authentically you — orange soda, dad hats, and all.
