Orange Soda at Midnight

Maya's cat Luna decided Halloween night was perfect for sprinting out the open front door. Great. Just great.

"LUNA!" Maya shouted, already breathless. She grabbed her sneakers and bolted outside, still wearing her half-done zombie makeup from the party she'd been getting ready for. Her phone buzzed in her pocket - probably her friends wondering where she was. They'd all been planning to hit up Tyler's party since, like, forever. First party of junior year. Major social event.

Now here she was, running down suburban streets at 11:47 PM, chasing a cat, looking like the walking dead.

An orange streetlight flickered ahead as she spotted Luna crouched under someone's porch. But Luna wasn't alone. A massive dog lay there, watching her with what looked like amused judgment.

"Oh, hey buddy," Maya whispered, slowly approaching. The dog thumped his tail against the porch. Luna wound around his legs like they were besties.

"Cameo!" A voice called out. A girl around Maya's age stepped onto the porch, wearing oversized sweats and holding an orange soda. She had the same eyeliner Maya had spent twenty minutes trying to perfect. "Who's this?"

"Maya. My cat... decided to explore."

"That's Luna. She visits Cameo every night." The girl smiled. "I'm Alex. Want help?"

Together they coaxed Luna out. Alex handed Maya an orange soda. "You look like you need this more than I do."

"Thanks." Maya took it. "I was supposed to be at this party..."

"Tyler's?" Alex made a face. "I was gonna go, but honestly? I'd rather hang out with Cameo and drink orange soda on my porch."

Maya looked at her zombie reflection in the window. She'd spent hours stressing about this party, her outfit, her makeup. And here she was, having way more fun sitting on a stranger's porch, drinking orange soda at midnight.

"You know," Maya said, "I think I'd rather be here too."

They talked until 2 AM about everything - school pressure, feeling like zombies most days, the expectations that made them want to run sometimes. Luna and Cameo slept curled together like they'd known each other forever.

Maya finally went home, her zombie makeup smudged, her orange soda empty, her phone full of texts she'd ignore until tomorrow. For the first time in forever, she didn't care about missing out. She'd found something better - real connection over fake perfection.
