Orange Soda Apocalypse
Maya stood by the snack table, clutching her red plastic cup like a lifeline. The music thumped against the walls of Jordan's basement, vibrating through the floorboards and up into her sneakers. She felt like a zombie - not the cool, Netflix kind with dramatic makeup and storyline, but the awkward, brain-dead variety that somehow ended up at parties she didn't even want to attend.
"Yo, you good?" Jordan appeared, looking concerned in his oversized hoodie.
Maya managed a weak nod. "Yeah. Just... tired."
"Same." He leaned against the wall. "Senior year is literally killing me. I think I've slept like twelve hours total this week."
Maya took a sip of her drink. Orange soda - too sweet, too artificial, exactly what she needed. The caffeine hit her system as she watched everyone else laugh and dance and actually be alive while she stood there feeling like an extra in her own life.
"I think I'm gonna head out," she said, setting her cup down.
"You sure?" Jordan raised an eyebrow. "You just got here twenty minutes ago."
"Yeah. Just... not feeling it tonight."
"Fair." He gestured toward the back door. "Pool's open if you wanna chill there for a bit. More quiet."
The backyard was completely different. No thumping music, no people trying too hard. Just the pool shimmering under the string lights, the water looking dark and mysterious in the November cold. Maya dipped her hand in - freezing, but somehow it felt more real than anything else tonight.
Without thinking, she kicked off her sneakers and sat on the edge, feet dangling in the water. The cold shocked her system, woke her up in a way caffeine never could.
"Nice, right?" Jordan's voice from behind her.
She jumped slightly, then relaxed. "Yeah. Actually, it really is."
"You know what's wild?" He sat beside her, not too close, not too far. "We're all running around like zombies trying to be cool, but the best part of tonight is just sitting here with our feet in freezing water."
Maya laughed - a real laugh this time. "Truth."
The orange soda from earlier seemed like a lifetime ago. Here, with the cold water shocking her awake and Jordan just existing beside her without trying to impress anyone, she finally felt like herself again. Not a zombie. Not an extra. Just Maya, alive and awake and ready to stop sleepwalking through her own life.
