Orange Slice Summer

I caught Marcus's eye across the padel court, my stomach doing that nervous flutter thing. Sweat dripped down my back as I gripped my racquet, pretending I totally knew what I was doing. "Nice swing!" he yelled, and I nearly tripped over my own feet.

We'd been flirting for weeks, and today felt like the perfect setup — just the two of us, no squad watching. After an intense set, we collapsed on the bench, laughing about my tragic serve that somehow hit the net every single time.

Marcus pulled out his lunch bag, trying to act all casual. "Want some snacks? My mom's obsessed with health food, sorry."

He handed me a spinach salad that looked suspiciously like something from a wellness blog. I took a bite, trying to look sophisticated, but green stuff immediately lodged between my front teeth. Perfect timing, honestly.

Meanwhile, the baseball team practiced nearby, their bats cracking like thunder. Marcus kept glancing over there, and I realized too late — the spinach situation was definitely visible.

"Your smile's got some... green," Marcus said, trying not to laugh.

I practically drowned in my own embarrassment. But instead of being weird about it, he just tossed me an orange slice. "It's cool. Nobody's perfect, right?"

Something shifted between us then. The awkwardness melted away, and we started talking about everything — my nerves about high school tryouts, his secret fear of not making the team next year. The padel court became our unexpected sanctuary, a place where vulnerability actually felt okay.

As we walked home later, orange-stained fingers almost touching, I realized first impressions aren't what actually matter. Sometimes the most real moments happen with spinach in your teeth and someone who sees past it anyway.
