Orange Skies, No Hiding
The sun painted Marco's bedroom in orange light as he stared at his iPhone, thumb hovering over Maya's contact. His lucky hat sat on the bedpost instead of his head - tonight, no hiding.
"Vitamin D deficiency called," his sister Mia sneered from the doorway. "Stop lurking and just text her already."
"Shut up, Mia." Marco grabbed his orange sweatshirt, heart pounding. His goldfish, Bubbles, watched from its bowl beside the bed - a carnival prize from last summer, the night he and Maya became best friends. The night he started hiding behind the hat, building walls instead of bridges.
When he arrived at the bonfire, Maya was already there, wearing that smile that made his chest do weird things.
"Marco?" She tilted her head, grinning. "You look... different. Good different."
"Trying something new."
They ended up sitting by the fire, her fingers brushing his when she passed a s'more. His phone stayed in his pocket - a rare moment of actually being present. She talked about her art portfolio, about how she was tired of pretending to be someone she wasn't online. The vulnerability hung between them, electric and terrifying.
Later that night, Marco spotted Maya's Instagram story: a candid photo of them together by the fire, no filters, captioned: "when your favorite person finally shows up as himself."
He grinned at Bubbles swimming lazily in its bowl. No more hiding behind hats or curated feeds. Just Marco - awkward, vitamin-deficient, and finally, somehow, enough.
