Orange Skies and Papaya Secrets
Maya smoothed her vintage orange sundress and checked her reflection in the bathroom mirror one last time. The bathroom window framed a sunset painting the sky in sherbet shades—her phone camera had already captured three versions of it.
"You coming or what?" called Chloe, her best friend since seventh grade. But this year, something felt different. Chloe had been acting weird all summer, texting behind everyone's backs, ducking out of hangouts with vague excuses.
Outside by the pool, someone had brought a fruit platter that looked ridiculous. Maya watched as Tyler grabbed a slice of papaya, made a face like he'd bitten into soap, and immediately spit it into a napkin. His friends roared. Maya snorted.
"You good?" asked Kai from beside her. He'd been her lab partner all sophomore year—quiet, smart, constantly fixing his hair. She'd caught him looking at her twice already tonight.
"Yeah. Just... observing." She nodded toward the house. "Chloe's been acting off lately."
Kai followed her gaze. "Maybe she's going through something. People do that."
Maya hesitated. She'd been meaning to tell Chloe about her crush on Kai for weeks, but every time she tried, Chloe's phone would buzz and she'd suddenly have to go.
Then she saw it—Chloe standing in the kitchen doorway, phone raised, taking photos of them. Not sneaky about it at all. Directly.
Her stomach dropped. Was Chloe trying to expose her? Document her awkward attempts at flirting for their friend group to mock later? Her hands felt cold despite the summer heat.
"I'll be back," she told Kai, and marched toward the house.
Chloe slipped into the laundry room as Maya approached, like she'd been waiting. Maya followed, closing the door behind them.
"What's up with the spy act?" Maya demanded.
Chloe's face fell. "You noticed."
"You've been weird all summer. Taking photos, ditching plans... are you making fun of me?"
"What? No!" Chloe's eyes went wide. "I've been helping your Instagram presence. Your engagement is down and I know you're trying to become an influencer, so I've been—"
"Wait, what?" Maya blinked.
Chloe pulled up her account. "See? I tagged you in those sunset photos. Your aesthetic is finally consistent. You're welcome, by the way."
Maya stared at her. Then she started laughing. She couldn't stop.
"I'm not trying to be an influencer! I just like sunsets!"
"Oh." Chloe's face turned the color of a ripe papaya. "My bad."
They were still giggling when Kai knocked on the door. "Everything okay in there?"
Maya opened it, grinning. "Everything's perfect."
She grabbed his hand. "Let's go get water before Tyler eats something else he hates."
Chloe fake-gagged behind them. Maya squeezed Kai's fingers tighter. Tomorrow, she'd tell Chloe about Kai. Tonight, they'd just be seventeen, at a party with orange skies and papaya on a paper plate, and nobody was keeping any secrets at all.
