Orange Skies and Deep Waters

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, her heart doing that annoying fluttery thing it always did when Liam was around. He was swimming laps with that easy, athletic grace she'd been secretly admiring since September, his dark hair slicked back, water droplets glistening on his shoulders like diamonds.

"You coming in or what?" Caleb called from the diving board, doing his best to sound casual. The pool party had been Jenna's idea—something about "bonding before finals week" but really just an excuse to show off her new orange bikini.

Maya's orange one-piece, two years old and practically ancient by TikTok standards, suddenly felt incredibly lame. She'd never been comfortable in swimming situations. While everyone else was doing cannonballs and perfect dives, she was still trying to master not looking like a drowning squirrel.

"Maybe in a bit," Maya mumbled, scrolling through her phone like it contained the secrets to the universe.

"She's scared of the deep end," someone whispered—maybe one of Jenna's friends, definitely loud enough for everyone to hear. Maya felt her face burn hotter than July asphalt.

Liam pulled himself out of the water, dripping wet, and suddenly Maya's stomach did a backflip. Not the good kind. He walked over, and every ounce of her social anxiety went into overdrive.

"Hey."

That was it. Just "hey." But somehow it sounded like a whole sentence.

"Hey." Smooth, Maya. Real smooth.

"You okay?" His orange swim trunks caught the sunlight, bright against his tan skin.

"Yeah. Just... thinking." About how the water looked like liquid anxiety, about how everyone else seemed to own their place in the world while she was still reading the instructions.

"Pool's not that deep." Liam's crooked smile did things to her heart rate that should probably be medically concerning. "Unless you overthink it."

"I don't overthink," Maya lied. She'd been overthinking everything since seventh grade when she realized that normal people didn't rehearse conversations with their bedroom wall.

"Come on." He held out a hand. "I'll show you the shallow end's not actually scary. It's basically just standing up with better lighting."

Maya hesitated. The water shimmered with that deceptive calm that always made her nervous. But then she looked at Liam's hand, his fingernails painted chipped blue from some art project, and something shifted.

She took his hand.

The water was cold at first, shocking her system. But then it wrapped around her like an embrace, and suddenly she was floating. Not drowning, not panicking. Just floating.

"See?" Liam's voice was softer now, closer. "You've been swimming the whole time. Just needed someone to show you how."

Above them, the sky had turned that perfect shade of orange that only exists in golden hour and good Instagram filters. Maya laughed, really laughed, and for the first time in forever, she wasn't overthinking anything at all.
