Orange Revolution

Maya stared at the box of orange hair dye like it was a bomb. Well, technically it WAS going to blow up her life.

"You're seriously doing this?" Chloe popped another piece of gum. "Your mom is going to lose it."

"Exactly." Maya ripped the box open. "She wants perfect daughter? She gets orange daughter."

The transformation took forty minutes and way too many bathroom selfies. When Maya finally emerged, her formerly mouse-brown hair blazed like sunset fire. She felt different. Powerful. Like she could finally breathe.

Her mom didn't lose it. She just... froze. That was worse.

The next morning at school, Maya's orange hair became its own social media event. People she'd never spoken to commented on her Instagram. Random high-fives in the hallway. It was both terrifying and electric.

But by lunch, the glow faded. She was still Maya, still overthinking every conversation, still worrying about college applications and her parents' disappointed silences. The hair was just hair.

That's when she found him.

The goldfish bowl sat on the counter of her bedroom, forgotten since her birthday two months ago. Inside, a single orange fish floated near the top, looking as melodramatic as she felt.

"Hey," Maya whispered. "Nice color."

The goldfish bubbled back.

She'd named him Tesla initially (creative, right?), but somehow he'd become the silent witness to her midnight overthinking sessions. While she stressed about GPAs and friend drama and whether orange hair was actually brave or just stupid, Tesla just... existed.

No expectations. No performing. Just being.

"You know what?" Maya tapped the glass. Tesla darted away, then circled back. "You're living your best fish life. Maybe I should too."

Her mom knocked softly, leaning in the doorway. For once, she didn't look disappointed. Just... tired.

"Your hair," she said. "It's bright."

"Yeah."

"It suits you." Her mom hesitated. "I forget sometimes that you're not little anymore. That you get to decide who you are."

Maya felt something loosen in her chest. "I'm still figuring that out."

"We all are." Her mom smiled. "Even me."

That night, Maya texted Chloe a selfie: orange hair visible, peace sign thrown, Tesla photobombing in the background.

The likes rolled in. But for the first time, Maya didn't care about the numbers. She was too busy watching her orange fish swim in lazy circles, finally okay with not knowing where she was going next.
