Orange Palm at Midnight
Maya felt like a zombie as she dragged herself through the end-of-semester party. Three finals, zero sleep, and somehow she'd agreed to come to Jessica's house anyway. Her phone buzzed in her pocket — probably her mom wondering where she was, or more likely, wondering when she'd be home.
The backyard was packed. Seniors crowded around the pool, music thumping from someone's Bluetooth speaker. Maya spotted her best friend Chloe by the **palm** tree, laughing with some juniors Maya barely recognized. Chloe's hair was different — she'd dyed it a vibrant **orange** last week, a bold move that made Maya's stomach twist with something between admiration and jealousy.
"You made it!" Chloe appeared beside her, pulling her into a hug that smelled like coconut shampoo and citrus perfume. "I didn't think you'd come after that history final."
"Barely," Maya admitted. "I'm operating on coffee and spite."
Chloe giggled. "Well, perfect timing. Everyone's talking about how Jake Evans is throwing himself at Lisa again. Honestly, it's giving major secondhand embarrassment energy."
Maya followed her gaze to where Jake — Jake 'perfect hair' Evans — was indeed making awkward conversation with Lisa Chen, who looked like she'd rather be literally anywhere else. The social hierarchy at their school was relentless, like a game everyone pretended wasn't rigged.
Then her phone buzzed again. Not her mom. A text from Marcus: *pool behind the gym. now. if you're actually down for this.*
Her heart did that thing where it forgot how to beat properly. Marcus, who she'd been flirting with for weeks. Marcus, who'd suggested they do something crazy for summer solstice. Marcus, who'd texted her at 11:48 PM on a Thursday.
"I have to go," Maya told Chloe suddenly.
"What? You just got here!"
"I know, but... it's important. Like, actually important."
Chloe studied her face for a second, then grinned. "Oh my god, is this about Marcus? Go. I'll cover for you."
Maya slipped out the side gate and sprinted through the humid night air, past the darkened tennis courts, until she reached the pool behind the gym. No lights, just moonlight reflecting off the **water**. And there was Marcus, already in the pool, treading **water** with a nervous energy that matched hers perfectly.
"You came," he said, sounding surprised and genuinely happy.
"You thought I wouldn't?" Maya dropped her bag on the concrete. The school technically banned after-hours pool access, which was exactly why she'd agreed to this. Something reckless. Something real. Something that wasn't about grades or college applications or who was sitting with whom at lunch tomorrow.
"I don't know." Marcus swam to the edge. "You seem like you follow rules."
"Yeah, well. appearances can be deceiving."
She kicked off her sandals and pulled her shirt over her head, suddenly hyper-aware that she was **swimming** in her underwear at midnight with a boy she'd been thinking about for weeks. The **water** was shockingly cold against her skin, waking up every nerve ending like an electric jolt.
When she surfaced, Marcus was watching her with this expression she couldn't quite read. Something between impressed and terrified and maybe, just maybe, a little bit in love.
"You're really doing this," he said.
"you're the one who suggested it."
"I know, but... I thought you'd say no."
Maya floated onto her back, looking up at the stars, realizing she wasn't tired anymore. The zombie feeling had evaporated, replaced by something alive and electric and terrifyingly wonderful.
"Maybe," she said, splashing **water** at him, "I'm full of surprises."
