Orange Padel Fridays
Leo's life officially peaked at 3:47 PM on a Friday, which was tragic because he was dressed as a giant bear.
It started with padel. That's right, padel—the sport everyone at Westwood High was suddenly obsessed with because some influencer posted about it. Leo, being Leo, had spent three weeks researchingYouTube tutorials and practicing his serve against the garage door. All because Maya Rodriguez had mentioned she wanted to learn.
"Bro, you need to relax," Marcus had said that morning, practically force-feeding him some neon-orange vitamin supplement. "You're vibing too hard. It's giving... intense energy."
Intense energy. That was one way to put it.
Here's the thing about the bear costume: Leo's mom had signed him up for the school mascot gig without actually consulting him first. "It builds character!" she'd said. "Colleges love extracurriculars!"
So there Leo was, sweating inside a polyester bear head, clutching a padel racquet like his dignity depended on it. Maya was supposed to meet him at the courts after school. Instead, the principal had intercepted him in the hallway.
"Bert!" Principal Chen shouted. "The pep rally starts in five minutes! What are you doing with that... tennis thing?"
"It's PADEL," someone whispered from the growing crowd of students watching this whole disaster unfold. "And that's definitely Leo under there."
Maya was in that crowd. Leo felt it in his bones. Or maybe that was just the sweat making his bear suit feel like a portable sauna.
He ripped off the bear head. His hair was plastered to his forehead. He looked like he'd just emerged from a swamp. Maya was staring at him, wide-eyed. Someone's phone was definitely recording this.
"I..." Leo started, then just sighed. "I really like padel. And now I have to go be the bear."
Maya stepped forward. "That's literally the most unhinged thing I've ever heard." She grinned. "Teach me? After you finish being Bert?"
The crowd erupted. Marcus materialized from nowhere with another orange vitamin. "See? It worked! That's character development right there!"
Later that week, Leo and Maya played padel together. He kept the bear head in his locker as a reminder. Sometimes the most humiliating moments became the best origin stories. Also, Marcus's vitamins actually weren't that bad.
