Orange Lightning at Midnight

Maya's thumb hovered over the screen, another Instagram story loading. This was her new obsession—spying on the people who used to be her friends, trying to figure out exactly when everything went wrong.

Three weeks ago, she'd been part of the squad. Now she was watching their lives through a phone screen like some kind of digital ghost.

Tonight they were at Jordan's house. Even through the tiny screen, the theme was obvious: everyone wearing orange. Orange shirts, orange accessories, someone even had orange hair. It was supposed to be their color—hers and Jordan's—since freshman year, when they'd bonded over matching orange converse at back-to-school orientation.

The FOMO hit different at 2 AM. Maya pressed her phone against her forehead, feeling pathetic.

Then something made her sit up. In the background of Jordan's selfie, someone was holding a sign. MAYA WAS HERE—ORANGE CRUSH 2024. But that didn't make sense. She'd been home all night.

Unless...

Maya grabbed her yearbook from last year, flipped to the page she'd dog-eared. There she was, arm in arm with Jordan, both in orange everything. The caption read: "Best friends since the first day of freshman year."

Her fingers traced the photo. That was before rumors started flying. Before someone told Maya that Jordan had been talking behind her back. Before Maya stopped showing up to hangouts. Before the silent treatment became mutual.

She thought back to that day in the cafeteria—how Jordan had tried to sit at her table, and Maya had deliberately turned away, pretending to be absorbed in her phone. How Jordan's face had fallen before she walked toward her new group.

Outside her window, real lightning cracked across the sky, illuminating everything in this stark, orange-tinted flash from the streetlamp below. And suddenly it clicked—maybe she wasn't the one who'd been pushed out. Maybe she'd done the pushing.

The spy game wasn't about finding what they'd done to her. It was about seeing what she'd done to them.

Maya typed out a text to Jordan: "Miss you. That orange theme tho 😅"

She pressed send before she could talk herself out of it. The three bubbles appeared immediately.

Sometimes the real lightning wasn't in the sky. It was in the moment you finally saw yourself clearly.
