Orange in the Deep End

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The backyard was already packed with juniors from school, their laughter bouncing off the fence. Someone—probably Jake—had cranked the Spotify playlist to the point where conversation meant shouting.

"You coming in or what?" Chloe called from the water, her bright orange nail polish flashing like a warning sign. Chloe, who effortlessly floated between friend groups like she'd invented the concept of social capital. Chloe, who'd somehow convinced everyone that neon orange was "literally the color of summer." Maya hated how much she wanted to be her.

"Yeah, just, uh, checking something," Maya lied, thumbs racing through notifications she'd already seen three times.

The truth? She hadn't brought a swimsuit. Her brain had helpfully supplied twenty different reasons why showing up to Jake's party underprepared was social suicide, but somehow she'd talked herself into coming anyway. Something about seizing the moment, or maybe FOMO, or possibly just desperation.

"Maya!" Jake materialized at her side, shirtless and dripping. "Chloe said you're not swimming. That's not chill."

"Forgot my suit," she mumbled, face heating up.

"So?" He shrugged. "Just jump in. Everyone's already wet anyway."

Before she could overthink it—before she could list all the reasons this was a terrible idea—Maya kicked off her sandals. She shimmied out of her jeans and t-shirt, standing in her underwear and bra. Not matching. Not cute. Just random navy and black because she'd grabbed whatever was clean.

For three seconds, she waited for the silence. The stares. The judgment.

Instead, someone splashed water at her.

"Finally!" Chloe cheered. "About time you stopped lurking on the edge like a creeper."

Maya jumped.

The water swallowed her whole—cool, shocking, alive. When she surfaced, gasping, someone pressed a warm plastic bottle into her hand.

"Orange Fanta," Jake said. "For courage."

She looked around. Everyone was still talking, laughing, existing. No one cared that she'd just jumped in her underwear. No one was documenting it for posterity or making it a Thing.

Maya cracked the soda open. "Thanks."

"Next time," Chloe called from across the pool, "bring a suit. But also, like, honestly? Your confidence was kinda iconic."

Maya laughed, the sound catching her off guard. She floated on her back, staring up at the sky turning purple-orange with sunset, and thought maybe—just maybe—she'd been overthinking everything. Sometimes you just had to jump.
