Orange Hat Infiltration

The baseball tryouts were tomorrow, and Maya was freaking out. Not because she couldn't hit or catch—she'd been playing in secret with her cousins since middle school—but because she was about to become the first girl to try out for the varsity team since, like, forever.

"You're literally going to spy on their practice tonight," her best friend Priya had insisted, shoving her dad's old orange trucker hat onto Maya's head. "Reconnaissance, dude. Know your enemy."

The hat was ugly. Bright orange with some random construction company logo. But it was perfect for staying unnoticed.

That evening, Maya hid behind the bleachers, watching the boys' team practice. She felt ridiculous—like a low-budget spy in a cheesy teen movie. But she needed to know the coach's strategy, the team's plays, everything.

Then she saw him: Lucas Chen, the sophomore shortstop everyone said was destined for the majors. He was practicing alone in the corner, fielding ground balls with this intense focus that made her stomach do weird things.

Maya inched closer, totally creeped out by herself but unable to look away. Lucas stopped suddenly, catching her orange hat in his peripheral vision.

"You gonna spy all night or actually introduce yourself?" He called out, grinning like he knew something she didn't.

Maya's face burned. She walked over, heart pounding for reasons that had nothing to do with getting caught. "I'm trying out tomorrow."

"I know." Lucas tossed her a ball. "I saw you playing at the park last week. You've got a solid swing."

The orange hat suddenly felt a million degrees too hot. "You—wait, you noticed?"

"Hard not to." He gestured to her bright headwear. "That hat is kind of unforgettable, no offense."

Maya laughed despite her nerves. "My friend gave it to me for 'reconnaissance.'"

"Well, Spy." Lucas extended his hand. "Looking forward to seeing what you've got tomorrow."

The orange hat stayed on through tryouts the next day. Maya made the team, becoming the first girl in varsity history. But the real win wasn't the uniform—it was the text she got that afternoon from Lucas: "Good game today, Spy. Same time next week for extra practice?"

She kept the orange hat. Not for the disguise anymore, but as a reminder that sometimes the most embarrassing moments lead to the best ones.
