Orange Hat in the Woods
The orange beanie sat on my dashboard like a radioactive traffic cone. My mom's attempt at a birthday gift—bright traffic-cone orange with a pom-pom the size of a small planet.
"You'll lose it in the snow," she'd said, like I was actually gonna wear it to Sarah's party.
The cabin was already lit up when Kai and I pulled up. Someone's older brother had bought a handle of cheap vodka, which meant this was either gonna be legendary or a complete disaster. Probably both.
"Bro, you're not seriously wearing that," Kai said, gesturing at my head.
"It's cold as—" I started, but I caught myself. Whatever. I grabbed the hat and jammed it on.
The backyard was packed. I spotted Sarah by the bonfire, looking cozy in someone's oversized flannel. My stomach did that thing where it forgets how to stomach.
I was halfway there when I heard it—a massive crashing sound from the woods behind the cabin. Like a dumpster falling down a staircase.
Everyone froze.
"Bear!" someone screamed, and suddenly the whole party was scrambling toward the house.
I stood there, paralyzed. The crashing got closer, louder, and then—
A massive black bear burst through the treeline.
It stopped. It looked at me. It looked at my orange hat.
And then it just... turned around and lumbered away.
The silence that followed was the loudest thing I'd ever heard.
"Dude," someone breathed. "Your hat... it totally scared it off."
"What?"
"Bright orange, man. Hunters wear it. The bear probably thought you were packing."
Sarah appeared beside me, her eyes wide. "That was actually kind of epic."
I looked at the ridiculous orange pom-pom reflecting the firelight. Something shifted inside me—like maybe the stuff that made me stand out wasn't always the stuff to hide.
"Yeah," I said, pulling the hat down tighter. "Guess it's my lucky charm."
