Orange Hair, Zombie Heart

Jordan stared at their reflection, the neon orange hair dye screaming 'I'm different' in a world that wanted everyone to be the same. Three weeks into sophomore year, and they were still the new kid at Creekwood High. The orange hair was supposed to be a statement—maybe 'I don't care what you think'—but mostly it just felt like walking around with a neon sign that said 'please notice me, but not too much.'

The zombie makeup was Maya's idea. 'It's the pool party of the year, Jordy. You can't NOT go.' So here Jordan was, face painted like the undead, standing awkwardly at the edge of the Chandler's massive pool, clutching a can of orange Fanta like it was a lifeline.

Across the pool, the popular kids laughed. Taylor, with their perfect everything, did a cannonball that made everyone cheer. Jordan felt like a zombie in more ways than just the makeup—numb, disconnected, watching life happen from behind a glass wall.

Then someone splashed water at Jordan's feet. A guy with zombie face paint that looked actually pretty good.

'You gonna stand there all night or actually get in?' he asked. 'I'm Leo, by the way. And your orange hair is literally the coolest thing I've ever seen.'

Jordan's heart did something embarrassing. 'Jordan. And I'm not really swimming material.'

'Nobody's swimming material tonight,' Leo said, nodding at the chaos. 'It's a zombie apocalypse. We're all just surviving.'

Something about the way he said it—like he got it, like being a zombie wasn't just makeup but a whole mood—made Jordan step closer to the pool's edge.

'Maybe I'll dip my feet in,' Jordan said.

'Progress,' Leo grinned. 'First the feet. Then next thing you know, you'll be doing cannonballs with Taylor.'

Jordan laughed, and for the first time all night, the zombie makeup felt like armor instead of a mask. Maybe this was what growing up felt like—tiny moments of bravery, unexpected connections, and learning that even zombies could find someone who made them feel alive.
