Orange Hair, Wild Heart
Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, the harsh fluorescent lighting catching the chaos she'd made of her hair. The box said 'Sunset Orange,' but honestly? It looked more like a traffic cone explosion. She'd done it last night at 2 AM, fueled by three energy drinks and the desperate hope that Lucas—aka the actual fox of sophomore English—might finally notice her if she wasn't just Maya-with-the-brown-hair-anymore.
Now, standing in front of her bathroom mirror with panda eyes and zero sleep, she felt less like a bold new version of herself and more like a zombie that had stumbled out of a poorly funded horror movie. She reached for her sister's gummy vitamins on the counter—grossly shaped like bears and disturbingly delicious—and popped three. Maybe they'd fix her. Maybe they'd fix everything.
Her phone buzzed. Group chat explosion.
'OMG your hair???'
'Lowkey iconic ngl'
'Wait is this about Lucas??'
Maya groaned and stuffed her phone in her pocket, grabbing her backpack. She'd face the music. Or the zombie apocalypse. Same difference.
Walking to school, she took the shortcut through the woods behind her subdivision because she was NOT ready for the main road parade of everyone seeing The Hair. That's when she saw it—a real fox, all russet gold and impossible grace, standing near a cluster of trees. It watched her with these eyes that seemed to understand everything.
'You don't care what anyone thinks, do you?' she whispered.
The fox tilted its head, then melted into the shadows without a sound.
Something shifted in her chest. This wild thing didn't need validation. It didn't need Lucas to notice it or a group chat to approve its choices. It just WAS.
Maya touched her ridiculous orange hair and actually smiled. Zombie状态 or not, traffic cone explosion or not, this was HER choice. Her wild heart.
'Whatever,' she said to the empty woods. 'I'll rock it.'
And honestly? Lucas could deal.
