Orange Hair, Wild Heart

Maya's hands were literally shaking so bad she could barely unlock her iPhone. Standing outside Tyler's house, she smoothed her hair for the millionth time. The orange dye job she'd done two days ago still felt foreign—like wearing someone else's skin. But that was kind of the point, right? Reinventing herself for sophomore year.

Inside, the bass vibrated through the floor. People she'd known forever looked different in the dim light, mysterious and unattainable. Maya made it to the kitchen before her palms started sweating again. Great. Classic anxiety move.

"Hey, Orange!" someone called. Maya flinched, then realized it was Tyler, grinning from the doorway. "Love the new vibe."

"Thanks," she managed, her voice barely audible.

She slipped outside to the backyard for air, away from the crushing FOMO of watching everyone live their best lives without her. That's when she saw it—a fox, real as anything, sitting calmly near the palm tree by the fence. Its amber eyes locked with hers, and for one perfect, nonsensical moment, Maya felt seen. Truly seen.

The fox dipped its head, almost like a nod, then slipped into the darkness.

Maya's heart hammered, but not from fear. Something about that encounter—about being acknowledged by something wild and untamed—clicked into place. She pulled out her iPhone and opened the camera, flipping to selfie mode. The orange hair wasn't a disguise anymore. It was a declaration.

Her phone buzzed. A group chat blowing up inside, people wondering where she was. But Maya stayed by the palm tree another minute, letting the strange magic of the moment settle over her. The fox was gone, but something had shifted. She could feel it in her bones.

When she finally walked back inside, Maya didn't wipe her sweating palms on her dress. She didn't smooth her hair. She just walked in, orange and uncertain and absolutely, terrifyingly herself.
