Orange Hair Summer
Maya's orange bobbed beneath the water, strands spreading like flame under the pool's surface. She'd done it last night — bleached and dyed it in her bathroom while her parents slept, impulsively, because she was tired of being the girl who never did anything. The girl who blended into lockers and classroom walls like she was part of the architecture.
Now she floated at Jasmine's end-of-summer party, hair hidden under a bucket hat she'd snagged from her brother's closet, heart hammering every time someone looked at her like she might actually be interesting.
"You okay?" Emma asked, floating nearby. Emma, who was everything Maya wasn't: confident, loud, had somehow already had three boyfriends while Maya was still trying to figure out how to talk to guys without feeling like she was speaking a different language.
"Yeah," Maya said. "Just tired. Finals week killed me. I've been a zombie all week."
Emma laughed. "Tell me about it. I watched The Walking Dead until 3 AM last night because I couldn't sleep."
Maya's stomach did that thing it always did around Emma — equal parts admiration and terror. Jasmine waved from the pool edge, holding an orange. "Snacks!"
Maya pulled herself from the water, hat still pulled low. The chlorine smell clung to her skin like secret.
"Take off the hat," Emma said suddenly, peeling her orange.
Maya froze. "What?"
"The hat. You've been hiding all night."
The air felt thick. Maya's hands trembled. This was it — the moment she'd been waiting for and dreading all at once. She pulled the hat off.
Orange hair spilled out, bright against the summer dark.
Emma stared. Then she grinned. "Finally."
"Finally?" Maya blinked.
"I've been waiting for you to do something crazy for years," Emma said, handing her a slice of orange. "You're always watching. Always on the sidelines. I was wondering when you'd jump in."
Maya laughed, something real and genuine bubbling up from somewhere deep. She wasn't a zombie anymore. She wasn't watching life happen through a window.
She dove back into the pool, orange hair trailing behind her like a banner. Somebody whooped. Maya surfaced grinning, water streaming down her face, finally part of it all. Finally seen.
