Orange Hair & Secrets

orangepadelspyzombie

The half-orange hair color was supposed to be bold. Instead, I looked like a traffic cone that had seen better days. My mom practically chased me around the kitchen with a roll of paper towels, trying to "fix" it before school pictures. Epic fail.

Now I'm sitting on the metal bleachers behind the padel courts, watching Luna's crush practice his serves. Padel, because apparently tennis wasn't pretentious enough for the kids at Ridgeview Academy. It's like tennis but with a smaller court and solid paddles, and somehow it's become the social currency of our junior class.

"You're basically my spy," Luna had said that morning, handing me a barely-touched orange from her lunchbox. "Ash plays padel every Tuesday after school. I need intel."

Intel. Like I'm some kind of undercover agent instead of a girl who once accidentally called her teacher "mom" during a presentation.

I peel the orange while watching Ash and his friends laugh between serves. I haven't slept properly in three days—midterms are turning me into something resembling a zombie. My eyes burn, my brain feels like it's been replaced with cotton balls, and I'm pretty sure I wore two different socks today.

But then something catches my eye. Ash isn't just the popular kid everyone thinks he is. Between games, I see him pull out a battered notebook, scribbling furiously while his teammates fool around. When no one's looking, he sketches these intricate designs in the margins—dragons and wings and things that don't fit the golden-boy image.

Later, when Luna texts me asking for dirt, I find myself typing: "He's actually kind of... cool."

"Cool?!" Luna replies. "Does he mention me?!"

I pause, thinking about the private, creative version of Ash I just witnessed. The one who doesn't care who sees him drawing.

"No," I write back. "But I think that's okay."

Because maybe we're all just zombies trying to figure out who we are. Maybe the real secret isn't about having a crush who likes you back. It's about finding the people who let you be weird and creative and yourself—whether that's with orange hair or a secret sketchbook or both.

I take another bite of my orange and watch Ash serve again. Maybe being a spy isn't so bad after all.
