Orange Hair Season
The bathroom mirror showed a stranger. My normally boring brown hair was now a screaming orange, like I'd dunked my head in Fanta. Three boxes of dye and one impulsive decision later, and I looked like a traffic cone.
My chihuahua mix, Buster, tilted his head at me, ears flopping sideways like, "What did you do, human?"
"Don't look at me like that," I muttered, smoothing down the frizz that refused to cooperate. "It's called reinvention, Buster. Look it up."
I'd needed a change. My supposed best friend, Chloe, had been ghosting me all week after I'd supposedly "flirted with her crush" at lunch. The rumor spread faster than a TikTok trend, and suddenly my entire friend group was treating me like I was invisible. Even in the hallways, they'd deliberately look past me like I was nothing.
So here I was, starting freshman year with orange hair and zero friends. Peak high school tragedy.
The next day at school, I kept my head down, waiting for the stares. But something weird happened – nobody cared. Well, nobody except this girl Ruby from my English class who sat behind me in third period.
"Nice hair," she said, spinning her chair around to face me. "Did you use the Nuclear Sunset shade?"
I blinked. "Um, yeah? Actually?
"I tried that once," Ruby said, grinning. "Turned my hair green for a week. My mom almost had a heart attack."
We talked through the entire period. She was new, didn't know about the rumors, didn't care about the drama. By lunch, we were sitting together, both packing orange soda like it was our personality trait.
"You know," Ruby said, cracking open her soda, "I'd rather have one real friend than twenty fake ones."
I thought about Chloe and her crew. Thought about how quick they were to drop me over something I didn't even do.
"Yeah," I said, petting Buster later that afternoon as he curled up beside me on the couch. "Me too."
My hair was still orange. My old friends were still acting like I didn't exist. But for the first time in weeks, I didn't feel invisible. Sometimes the best things start with a bad decision and a box of cheap hair dye.
