Orange Hair & Riddle Boys
Maya stared at her reflection, the neon **orange** hair dye staining her sink. She was done being invisible in the sophomore **pyramid**—the invisible social hierarchy that determined who sat where at lunch. Today was Jordan's pool party, and today she'd make waves.
She arrived fashionably late, orange curls wild against the humidity. The pool area was already packed—the popular clique dominating the shallow end like they owned the **water**. Maya positioned herself by the snack table, awkwardly clutching a solo cup.
"Nice hair," said a voice behind her. She turned to find Leo, the mysterious junior everyone called "the **sphinx**" because he never spoke unless he had something actually worth saying. His dark eyes held hers like a challenge.
"Thanks," she managed. "Figured it was time to stop being a ghost."
Leo's lip curled. "Ghost? More like a **goldfish** in a tank of sharks. But I like the orange. It's brave."
Maya's heart raced. "Is that your way of saying I stand out?"
"I'm saying you're finally visible." He stepped closer. "Wanna know what I think?"
She nodded, unable to look away.
"I think this whole party is a performance," he said quietly. "Everyone playing their parts, terrified of slipping. But you? You're not playing anymore."
Something shifted in Maya's chest—all that anxiety dissolving into something electric. Leo reached out, tucking a wild curl behind her ear. His fingers lingered.
"The real question," he murmured, "is whether you're ready for what happens next."
She grinned, feeling bold for the first time in her life. "Try me."
Leo smiled—and the sphinx finally spoke without riddles. "Good. Because I've been waiting all year for you to stop being invisible."
