Orange Hair Redemption

Maya stared at her reflection, fingers tugging at the bright orange hair framing her face. Third attempt, still weird. The box promised "sunset copper," but she looked like a traffic cone.

"You look fire, honestly," Jordan insisted from her bed, scrolling through TikTok. "Bold. Iconic behavior."

"Bold" wasn't the vibe Maya wanted for Kayla's party tonight. Not when Tyler—aka Tyler the Actual Human Solar Eclipse—would be there.

Maya's stomach growled. She'd barely eaten all day, too stressed. The kitchen downstairs was quiet; her mom was at work. Maya grabbed the bag of baby spinach from the fridge—healthy, responsible, definitely not something that could get stuck in your teeth and ruin your life.

Spoiler: it could.

Two hours later, Maya stood against Kayla's basement wall, watching people dance to low-fi hip hop, nursing a cup of fruit punch that tasted like regret. The spinach incident? Jordan had pointed it out with zero chill five minutes after arrival. Maya had spent twenty minutes in the bathroom "freshening up" while actually performing emergency dental surgery with her fingernail.

Then she felt something wet on her hand.

Buster, Kayla's elderly golden retriever, had appeared beside her, nudging her palm with that desperate hope that said, "I will literally eat anything, please notice me."

Maya crouched down, scratching behind his ears. "Hey, buddy. Having a better night than me?"

"He likes you."

Tyler. Standing there. Actual Tyler, wearing that stupidly perfect bomber jacket that made everything look intentional.

"Buster's everyone's best friend," Maya said, trying to sound normal. "Low standards."

Tyler laughed, and it was annoyingly genuine. "He's selective. I've known him since kindergarten and he still ignores me half the time."

They wound up sitting on the basement steps, talking about nothing and everything while Buster snored between them. Maya's orange hair, the spinach emergency, the fact that she was sweating through her shirt—none of it mattered. Tyler made a joke about his own disastrous haircut freshman year, showed her a picture, and Maya actually laughed so hard she snorted.

Unattractive? Probably. Real? Definitely.

Later, Jordan texted: "how's it going with ORANGE MAYA"

Maya looked across the room, where Tyler was animatedly telling a story, gesturing with both hands. He caught her eye and grinned.

She typed back: "actually? kinda iconic behavior."
