Orange Hair, Old Bear

Maya stared at her reflection, fingers tangled in the bright orange hair she'd dyed at 2 AM using some sketchy TikTok tutorial. The color screamed 'look at me' — exactly what she didn't want, but exactly what she needed.

Freshman year at Northwood High, and she was determined not to be 'quiet Maya' anymore. The girl who sat in back, the one nobody noticed. This orange catastrophe was her 'glow up,' her rebrand.

Her backpack was stuffed with her old life — including Mr. Snuffles, the teddy bear she'd slept with since she was four. She'd grabbed it by accident that morning in her panic to catch the bus. Now it was wedged between her algebra textbook and the tangled mass of charging cables she'd jammed in there.

Perfect.

The bus lurched. Maya's heart picked up speed as Northwood's parking lot came into view. Groups of friends clustered together, laughing. She spotted the cool table — the ones who looked like they belonged in a TikTok aesthetic video, not real life.

She grabbed her bag and Mr. Snumbles — dammit, Mr. SNUFFLES — tumbled out onto the floor.

The whole bus went quiet.

A guy with curly hair and a Led Zeppelin shirt picked up the bear. "Is this... vintage?"

Maya's face burned hotter than her hair. "It's old."

"Old is cool." He handed it back. "I'm Leo. My grandma collects these — says they're way better than the stuff they make now."

She blinked. "Really?"

"Totally." He pointed at her hair. "And that color? I dig it. Looks like sunset."

The cool table was watching. The girl with perfect winged eyeliner caught Maya's eye and actually smiled.

Maybe being 'quiet Maya' wasn't so bad. Maybe the orange wasn't a mistake. Maybe she didn't have to perform a new version of herself.

She tucked Mr. Snuffles back into her bag, between the cables and the textbooks, and followed Leo off the bus. For the first time, she didn't try to be anyone else.
