Orange Hair & Fox Eyes
Maya stood in front of her bathroom mirror, the box of temporary hair dye clutched in her sweaty palms. **Orange** Sunset Blast. The color on the box looked like someone had bottled pure confidence. Meanwhile, Maya felt about as confident as a unicycling giraffe.
"You're actually doing it?" Her best friend Chen leaned against the doorframe, scrolling through TikTok. "Bold move for the first day of sophomore year."
"I'm done being invisible," Maya said, though her voice shook. "Literally nobody notices me unless they need homework answers." She uncapped the **vitamin** C supplements on her counter—her mom swore they'd help her "glow from within." Whatever that meant. At this point, she'd settle for glowing at all.
The dye process took forty minutes she spent doomscrolling through posts of people who actually had their lives together. When she finally rinsed it out... well. It wasn't exactly Orange Sunset Blast. More like Desperate Tangerine Explosion. But honestly? She kind of loved it.
Monday morning in the cafeteria, something shifted. People actually looked at her. Not in that fake "oh look at the weird girl" way, but genuinely. Even Liam—the **fox**-eyed junior who'd barely acknowledged her existence since sixth grade—did a double-take. His amber eyes locked onto hers from across the room, and Maya felt something flutter in her chest that had nothing to do with anxiety.
"New hair?" He slid into the seat beside her. "It's... bright."
"That's one word for it," she laughed, and it came out easier than she expected.
"It's sick," he said. "You're always reading that thick book about foxes in homeroom. The orange hair kinda fits."
Maya blinked. He'd noticed?
"You want to sit with us at lunch?" Liam nodded toward his table. "We're talking about forming an environmental club. Thought you might be interested since you're, like, obsessed with wildlife."
Her mind did a backflip. Environmental club? With Liam? With people who actually saw her?
"Yeah," she said, feeling something shift inside her—something like finally exhaling after holding her breath for years. "Yeah, I'd love that."
Later that night, she texted Chen: I think I just made actual friends. AND Liam talked to me.
Chen replied instantly: The orange hair worked its magic. Also, you're welcome for the emotional support.
Maya laughed, grabbing her phone to google: "do foxes actually like oranges?" The answer was no, but somehow, that felt perfect. Some things you had to figure out for yourself.
