Orange Hair, First Serves

Maya stared at her reflection, the orange dye already staining her shower floor. Ten minutes ago, her best friend Sophie had texted I can't hang out tonight and she'd done this. Impulse dye job during an existential crisis — classic Maya behavior.

Whatever. She was fifteen, she could have orange hair if she wanted.

Her phone buzzed again. Not Sophie. PRACTICE CANCELLED. Coach sick.

Great. Now she had zero plans and ridiculous hair.

She grabbed her padel racket from the corner of her room. Maybe she'd practice serves at the park. Anything was better than sitting here overthinking why Sophie had been acting weird all week.

The evening air smelled like rain as she jogged toward the courts, running harder than necessary. Her orange hair flew behind her like a flame — a signal flare for her current life crisis.

Someone was already there. A fox. An actual, real fox, sitting on the padel court like it owned the place.

Maya stopped. The fox tilted its head, ears perked.

"This is my court," she said to the fox. Because that was her life now — talking to wildlife.

The fox didn't move.

"Fine, we'll share."

She approached slowly, racket raised. The fox watched, unconcerned, as she served ball after ball against the wall. Thwack. Thwack. The rhythm was soothing. Thwack.

"You're actually pretty good," someone said.

Maya spun around. A guy around her age stood there, padel bag slung over his shoulder. Brown hair, grey hoodie, ridiculously nice smile.

"Oh my god, I didn't hear you—"

"I was watching. Your form's solid." He stepped onto the court. "I'm Leo. I live in those apartments behind the courts."

"Maya." She gestured at her hair. "Obviously."

"Obviously." His smile widened. "Want to hit?"

They played until the sky turned deep purple. Leo was funny and easy to talk to, and for the first time all week, Maya wasn't thinking about Sophie. They exchanged numbers at the edge of the court.

"Same time tomorrow?" he asked.

"Definitely."

When she got home, Sophie had texted again. SORRY. My parents found out I'm failing math. Grounded. Can we FaceTime?

Maya typed back, OF COURSE. And added: Also I accidentally dyed my hair orange and met someone at the padel courts. There's a fox there.

Sophie's response came instantly: A FOX?! PICS. NOW.

Maya smiled. Tomorrow she'd bring her phone. Get photos of the fox, invite Sophie to meet Leo. Maybe new friend plus old friend plus random wildlife was exactly what she needed.
