Orange Hair, Empty Chair

Maya stared at the mirror, the fluorescent bathroom light bouncing off her freshly dyed orange hair. It wasn't the warm sunset-glow she'd pictured from the TikTok tutorial. It looked more like a traffic cone had an unfortunate accident on her head.

"You wanted a transformation," her best friend Lena had said while they were applying the dye in Maya's bedroom. "High school's almost over. Time to reinvent yourself."

Maya's fingers tangled through the stiff, crunchy strands. Her natural brown hair—boring, predictable, safe—was gone. In its place: this aggressive orange declaration that screamed *I'm trying too hard*.

Her phone buzzed on the bathroom counter. A text from Caleb: *party at jake's tonight u coming?*

Caleb, who she'd been crushing on since sophomore year. Caleb, who probably had cool, normal-colored hair preferences. The thought of walking into Jake's crowded basement looking like a human carrot made her stomach do somersaults.

Maya's cat, Barnaby, meowed from the hallway, probably judging her. He was a judgmental cat with personality issues, honestly.

Outside, the neighbor's dog started barking—some tiny yappy thing that always went off at the worst times.

She could skip it. Could text Caleb "not feeling it" and stay in her room. But that was the old Maya—the one who played it safe, who blended in, who never took chances. The orange hair was supposed to change all that.

A transformation meant committing to the bit. Even when the bit went sideways.

Maya grabbed her hoodie, pulled the hood up, and headed downstairs. She'd walk in. Own it. Let the traffic-cone hair be conversation starter or conversation killer. Either way, she'd finally be seen.

Barnaby watched her go, unimpressed. The dog kept barking. And Maya—the new orange-haired version—stepped into the night, terrified and exhilarated and ready to find out who she was underneath all that dye.
