Orange Hair Emergency
Maya stared at her reflection, fingers shaking as they hovered over the bleach-stained towel. Her hair—formerly a respectable chestnut brown—now blazed an aggressive traffic-cone orange. Like, actually radioactive.
"This is fine," she whispered to her reflection. "This is totally fine."
Her iPhone buzzed on the counter. Group chat exploding, naturally. Because 10 missed calls and 47 texts from Jenna about the party tonight wasn't enough pressure.
"MAYA ANSWER YOUR PHONE"
"R U COMING OR WHAT"
"ALEX IS GONNA BE THERE"
Maya groaned and buried her face in her hands. This was it. This was her life now. The girl with orange hair and zero chill.
Her phone buzzed again. Another text from Jenna: "dont come if ur gonna bail last minute again"
"that's rich," Maya muttered, "considering you bailed on my birthday literally last week."
But she couldn't say that. Could she?
Suddenly, a loud MEOW erupted from the windowsill. Mr. Whiskers—the neighborhood's most judgmental stray cat—was perched there, yellow eyes narrowed like he'd seen everything and was entirely unimpressed.
"Don't look at me like that," Maya snapped. "At least I'm not eating out of garbage cans."
The cat licked one paw daintily.
Maya's phone lit up with a new notification. Jenna had posted a selfie with Alex, captioned "squad 🫶". The same Jenna who'd spent all of sixth grade telling Maya her hair was "weird." The same Jenna who'd somehow weaseled her way into Alex's friend group freshman year while Maya was still trying to figure out which hallway led to the cafeteria.
Something in Maya snapped.
"You know what?" she announced to her empty room. "You know WHAT?"
She grabbed her iPhone and typed before she could stop herself:
"have fun being fake. im not coming tonight. or ever again actually."
Then she blocked Jenna's number.
Mr. Whiskers meowed approvingly.
Maya's hands shook as she stared at what she'd done. That was it. Social suicide. She'd be a pariah by Monday morning. Everyone would know. Everyone would—
Her phone buzzed again.
Unknown number: "hey saw u blocked jenna. good call she was talking smack about ur hair anyway. wanna hang? - sam"
Maya's heart did this weird little flip thing. Sam from English class? Sam who'd defended her when Jenna made fun of her hair in sixth grade?
She typed back: "only if u dont mind the orange hair"
Sam: "nah it looks sick. punk vibes. meet me at the park in 10?"
Maya grinned at her reflection. Okay, maybe orange hair wasn't so bad after all.
"Alright, Whiskers," she said, grabbing her jacket. "Wish me luck."
The cat yawned, stretched, and vanished into the night like he'd never been there at all. Like somehow, he knew everything was going to be okay.
