Orange Hair, Clear Water
Maya's palms were sweating as she stared at herself in the bathroom mirror. The orange hair dye she'd bought from the drugstore was supposed to be "sunset copper," but it looked more like traffic cone. Her mom was going to kill her, but that was a problem for Future Maya. Right now, she had to survive Jessica's pool party.
The guest list included half the sophomore class, including Tyler, who'd smiled at her in chemistry last week. Maya pulled her hair into a messy bun, threw on her swimsuit, and grabbed her bike.
"You're actually coming?" Jessica said when Maya arrived, gesturing to the Olympic-sized pool in her backyard. Some of Jessica's friends were already in the water, screaming and splashing. "I figured you'd be busy being... artistic."
Maya ignored that. She dropped her towel on a lounge chair and headed toward the pool, but her orange bun caught the sunlight like a beacon. A few people stared. She felt her face heating up.
"Nice hair," someone muttered.
"It's... bold," said another voice, and Maya turned to see Tyler climbing out of the water, droplets running down his chest. "Actually kind of cool. Different."
Maya blinked. "It was an accident."
"Accidents are more interesting anyway." He grinned. "You coming in? The water's perfect."
She hesitated, then slipped into the pool. The cool water enveloped her, washing away the sticky feeling of embarrassment. For the first time all day, she could breathe.
They ended up talking for hours while everyone else played beer pong and took TikToks. Tyler liked obscure indie bands and hated standardized testing and had once dyed his hair green for freshman initiation. He didn't care that she looked like a radioactive carrot.
When Maya's phone buzzed — her mom demanding she come home — she climbed out of the pool, water streaming down her legs. Her orange hair was frizzy now, half-fallen from its bun.
"Hey," Tyler said, following her. "Maybe next time, let me help you fix it. I've watched enough YouTube tutorials to be dangerous."
Maya smiled. "Next time?"
"Yeah. Next time." He pulled a slightly squashed orange from his snack pile and tossed it to her. "For luck."
She caught it, grinning like an idiot. Her hair was orange. Her social standing was questionable. But she had a standing invitation to hang out with Tyler, and honestly? That was a win.
Sometimes the best moments happened when everything went completely wrong.
