Orange Hair, Bold Moves
I'm standing on the padel court, my bright orange hair frizzy from humidity, feeling completely exposed. My sister had convinced me this summer league would help me "come out of my shell," but mostly I just feel like a walking neon sign that screams "look at me."
Across the net, Jake—the guy I've been low-key crushing on all semester—keeps glancing my way. Or maybe he's staring at my hair. It's hard to tell.
"Nice hair," his friend calls out. It sounds sarcastic.
My face flames. This is exactly why I'd spent the past three years wearing hoodies and dodging attention. Why couldn't I just blend in like normal people?
But then—game on.
Jake serves. The ball comes hard. I don't think, just swing. My racquet connects with a *thwack* that surprises everyone, especially me. The ball sails past him, landing perfectly inside the line.
"Whoa," someone says. "Where'd that come from?"
Jake grins. "Someone's got a hidden beast mode."
Something shifts. My sister cheers from the sidelines. For the first time all summer, I'm not the girl with weird orange hair. I'm a player. A competitor.
We win the match. Jake high-fives me, his palm warm against mine.
"You're actually really good," he says, like he means it.
Later, as I'm packing up, he finds me by the benches. "Hey, I was wondering—"
"You can say it," I cut in, gesturing at my hair. "It's a lot."
"What? No." He laughs. "I was going to ask if you wanted to practice sometime. But since you mentioned it..." He reaches out, tucks a stray curl behind my ear. "I think it's bold. Like you today."
My heart does this stupid little flip thing.
"So?" he asks. "Saturday? Same time?"
"Saturday," I agree, trying to play it cool. "I'll destroy you again."
He's still laughing as he walks away, and I realize my sister was right. Sometimes you have to stand out to find out who you really are. Even if it means having orange hair.
