Orange Hair, Blue Screen

Maya's hands shook as she mixed the box dye. Orange — specifically "Tangerine Dream" — had been impulse-buy territory, but the girl checking out at Target had given her that look. The you're-cool-enough-to-pull-this-off look.

Three hours later, her bathroom mirror told a different story. Her hair looked like a traffic cone. A radioactive traffic cone.

"Maya!" Her mom's voice cut through the door. "What did you DO?!"

Maya grabbed her iPhone and bolted. The screen glowed with seventeen unread messages from the group chat:

party at jake's tonight u coming??? 🎉

Her stomach did that thing it always did — the pre-social-event flip-flops. She'd been ghosting Jake's invites since freshman year. Too loud. Too many people. Too much potential for:

A) Saying something weird

B) Spilling something

C) Existing incorrectly

But tonight felt different. The orange hair was a statement. A horrible, neon statement, but a statement nonetheless.

Jake's house was already thumping when she arrived. Maya hovered by the snack table, clutching her phone like it could teleport her home if she squeezed hard enough.

Then she saw Chloe — the Chloe, who wore vintage band tees and didn't care what anyone thought — standing by the back door. With a cat. A tiny, black kitten that looked equally confused to be at a high school party.

"Found her under the porch," Chloe said, catching Maya staring. "Wanna help me figure out what to do?"

Maya nodded. They ended up on the roof, sharing stolen snacks and watching the kitten chase moths.

"Your hair," Chloe said suddenly. "It's... bold."

"Disaster bold or cool bold?"

"You-bold." Chloe grinned. "I like it."

Something in Maya's chest unlocked. They talked until the party wound down, about everything and nothing. When Jake's older brother started yelling about someone letting a cat in, they dissolved into hysterical laughter.

The walk home, Maya caught her reflection in a darkened window. The orange hair still looked ridiculous. But for the first time, she kinda liked ridiculous.

Her phone buzzed. A new group chat: just her and Chloe.

ur hair is iconic. same time next week? 🐈

Maya grinned, typing back: absolutely.
