Orange Hair, Big Problems
Maya's fingers wouldn't stop shaking as she adjusted the **orange** streak in her newly dyed hair. Senior year was supposed to be her glow-up era, but three weeks in, she was still the girl who sat alone at lunch and scrolled through TikTok to avoid eye contact.
"You're **running** for student council?" Maya's older brother, Leo—whose nickname was **Bear** thanks to his hibernation-like sleep habits—choked on his cereal. "The same Maya who hid in the bathroom during freshman orientation?"
"Shut up, Bear." Maya grabbed her backpack. "It's time to stop being invisible. Besides, Tyler's running too, and someone needs to call out his **bull**." Tyler had been spreading rumors that Maya's friend group was "dead weight" and nobody called him on it because his dad owned half the town.
The announcement speech was in twenty minutes. Maya's heart pounded like she'd just finished a 5K. Back in her room, her cat, Pancakes, head-butted her ankle. "At least someone believes in me," she whispered, scratching behind the cat's ears.
Truth was, Maya had been **running** from confrontation since middle school, letting people walk all over her while she stayed silent and "chill." But something snapped when she heard Tyler making fun of her friend Sarah's thrifted prom dress at lunch yesterday.
"You got this, Maya," Bear called from the living room. "Remember what Mom says—growth happens outside your comfort zone."
Maybe he was right. Maybe it was time to stop letting people determine her story. Maya straightened her orange streak, grabbed her speech notes, and headed out the door.
Some moments change you. This one would either make her or break her, but either way, she was done **running**.
