Orange Hair, Bad Days
The orange hair had been a mistake. Like, a massive mistake.
Maya stared at herself in the bathroom mirror, her normally brown hair now a terrifying shade of neon orange that could probably be seen from space. "This is fine," she whispered to her reflection, lying through her teeth. "It's giving punk. It's giving experimental. It's absolutely NOT giving 'I tried to dye my hair with a box kit I bought at CVS because I wanted to impress people at the party tomorrow night.'"
Her mom knocked on the door. "Maya? Everything okay in there? You've been in there a while."
"Fine!" Maya called back, wincing at how shrill she sounded. "Just doing my skincare routine."
"Okay, well, don't forget your vitamins!" Her mom's voice drifted through the door. "Those gummy ones are expensive!"
Maya grabbed the bottle of orange-colored gummy vitamins from the counter and shoved two in her mouth. They tasted like artificial fruit and regret. Maybe if she ate enough of them, she'd develop some kind of superpower that would make her hair magically return to its original color. Or at least make her invisible.
Because the worst part wasn't even the orange hair. It was that tomorrow was the first day of junior year, and now she was going to walk in looking like a human traffic cone.
Her phone buzzed. A text from her best friend Priya: "r u pumped for tomorrow??"
Maya typed: "not really"
Priya replied immediately: "u ok??"
Maya stared at her phone, wondering if she should send a photo. But then Priya would probably respond with something supportive like "it's not that bad" when it absolutely WAS that bad. So instead Maya just typed: "yeah just nervous"
She pulled up Instagram and started scrolling, feeling like a total spy creeping through everyone's perfect lives. There was Jessica, who she'd had a crush on since forever, posting aesthetic sunset photos. There was Tyler from her English class showing off his perfectly styled hair. And here was Maya, sitting in her bathroom with orange hair and anxiety that could power a small city.
The next morning, Maya stood in front of the school, her heart pounding so hard she thought it might actually burst. People were definitely looking. They had to be looking. She felt like she was under surveillance, like there were invisible cameras everywhere, documenting her walk of shame toward the front entrance.
"Maya!"
She turned to see Priya running toward her, wearing a bright yellow jacket and somehow making it look amazing. Priya stopped in front of her, eyes wide.
"Oh my GOD," Priya said.
Maya braced herself. Here it came. The polite lie. The "it's not that bad" speech.
"Your hair is SO COOL," Priya said instead. "Did you do it on purpose? It's giving main character energy."
Maya blinked. "Wait, really?"
"Are you kidding? Everyone's gonna be obsessed with you. You look like you actually take risks instead of just following the crowd." Priya linked her arm through Maya's. "Now come on, we're gonna be late. And I need to hear everything about your adventurous summer."
As they walked toward the school, Maya felt something shift. Maybe the orange hair wasn't a disaster. Maybe it was just... her. Imperfect and experimental and totally okay with not having everything figured out.
"Hey Maya?" Priya asked as they reached the front doors.
"Yeah?"
"You should totally wear more orange. It's your color."
Maya laughed, and for the first time all day, she didn't feel like hiding.
