Orange Hair at the Bottom of the Pyramid
Maya's hair was supposed to be caramel highlights. Emphasis on supposed to be.
Instead, she was standing in front of her bathroom mirror with what looked like a traffic cone explosion on her head. Bright. Neon. ORANGE.
"This is fine," she lied to herself. "This is totally fine."
Her phone buzzed. Group chat: *Pool party at Jake's tonight. You coming?*
Maya stared at her reflection. She'd spent months working her way up from the bottom of the freshman social pyramid, carefully curating her aesthetic, finally getting invited to the upper-tier parties. And now this.
"Whatever," she said, grabbing her swim bag. "Own it, Maya. Just own it."
The pool was already packed when she arrived. Through the backyard fence, she could hear water splashing and laughter. Her stomach did nervous flips. This was it. The moment everyone would see the disaster.
She pushed through the gate.
Conversation stopped. Like, actual silence.
Maya's face burned hotter than the hair dye incident itself. She turned to leave, to make up some excuse, to—
"YO!" Jake's voice cut through. "That orange is FIRE!"
Everyone stared at him, then at her.
"No, for real," said Chloe, who literally ruled the school's social pyramid. "I've been trying to get my hair that color for months. My stylist said it was impossible."
Maya blinked. "You... you like it?"
"Dude," Jake said, already cannonballing into the pool, sending water everywhere. "You're the only one brave enough to actually pull it off. We've all been playing it safe forever."
Maya looked around. Really looked. Everyone had perfect, safe, Instagram-worthy hair. Except her.
She smiled. Then she dropped her bag and dove straight into the deep end.
Sometimes the most embarrassing disasters turn out to be exactly what makes you stand out. Maya's orange hair wasn't a mistake after all—it was her finally figuring out who she actually was, neon traffic cone head and all.
