Orange Hair and Open Hearts

Maya's hands shook as she gripped her iPhone, scrolling through Instagram for the hundredth time that morning. First day of freshman year, and she already felt like a zombie—three hours of sleep will do that to you. Her hair, freshly dyed a vibrant orange that weekend, caught the fluorescent lights in the hallway bathroom mirror. Brave, she told herself. This is the new you.

The hallway was a sea of chaos. Students shouting, lockers slamming, everyone moving with terrifying confidence. Maya clutched her phone like a lifeline, her thumb hovering over her best friend's name.

That's when she saw him.

A fox—and not literally, but he moved like one, all sleek movements and clever eyes. Dark hair, vintage band tee, an effortless cool that made Maya's orange hair feel suddenly ridiculous. He was leaning against some lockers, surrounded by what looked like the popular crowd.

Then she noticed: a bull of a guy had cornered a smaller kid by the water fountains. Everyone was ignoring it. Even Fox Guy looked away.

Maya's heart pounded. Keep walking, said the voice in her head. Don't be weird. But her orange-haired self—that new, brave version—refused to listen.

"Hey!" she called out, surprised by her own voice. "Leave him alone."

The bull turned, and for a second, Maya thought she'd made a terrible mistake. But then Fox Guy pushed off the lockers and walked over. "Yeah, Brett. He said leave him alone."

The bully backed down, muttering something about not being worth it.

As the hallway cleared, Fox Guy caught Maya's eye and gave her the slightest nod. "Nice hair," he said, so quietly she almost missed it.

Maya's phone buzzed in her hand—a text from her best friend asking how it was going. She grinned, tucking a strand of orange behind her ear. This year might be okay after all.
