Orange Hair and Chlorine Air

Maya's life was perfectly organized, right up until the bottle of Sun-Kissed Orange hair dye exploded all over her bathroom. Three hours before Taylor's pool party. The one party of the summer that actually mattered.

"You're actually going like that?" Her little brother Leo leaned against the doorframe, grinning like he'd just won the lottery. "You look like a traffic cone."

"Shut up, Leo." Maya scrubbed at her hair with the fifth washcloth. Nothing worked. The orange wasn't subtle. It was aggressive, highlighter-neon orange, like her head had personally offended someone at the Crayola factory.

Her phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up:

JAZZ: everyone coming? 👙

SAM: obviously

CHLOE:maya?? u still cominggg

Maya stared at herself in the mirror. She could skip it. Say she got sick. Stay home with her identical twin excuses that had gotten her out of everything since seventh grade, when she'd stopped going to pool parties because someone said she looked like a string bean in a bikini.

Instead, she grabbed her bike and started riding.

She wasn't running away—she was just. Taking the long way. That's what she told herself, even though she was literally pedaling in the opposite direction of Taylor's house. Her legs pumped harder, the way they did during cross country, muscles working, lungs burning, everything simple and clean and focused on movement instead of her bright-orange disaster hair.

The air smelled like someone's grill and cut grass. Summer, basically. Her phone kept buzzing. Chloe: "???" Jazz: "we saved u a spot in the pool obvi"

Maya circled back, breath coming hard, thighs burning. This was fine. This was totally fine. She'd just walk in like her hair was supposed to look like a radioactive citrus fruit. Act like it was a choice. A vibe.

Taylor's backyard was already chaos when she arrived. People everywhere, music thumping, the pool glittering blue and perfect. Maya stepped through the sliding glass door—and everyone looked.

The conversation dipped. Like, actually dipped. Someone dropped a chip.

"Oh my GOD," Chloe shrieked, jumping up from her lawn chair. "Maya! Your HAIR!"

Here it came. The laughing. The pointing. The permanent social exile that would last through—

"It's literally SO cool," Chloe finished, grabbing Maya's arm. "Did you do it on purpose? It's giving alternative summer vibes, I'm obsessed."

"Uh," Maya said. "Yeah. Totally. On purpose."

"You should've seen me at the salon," she heard herself saying. "The stylist was like, 'are you sure?' and I was like, 'do I look unsure?'"

Jazz splashed water from the pool. "Get in here, Orange Maya!"

"That's your new name," Sam called. "No take-backs."

Maya dipped her foot in the water. Cool, perfect, accepting. She dove in, chlorine filling her nose, arms cutting through blue, orange hair floating around her like a weird halo. Underwater, everything was muffled and peaceful. She could stay here forever.

When she broke the surface, Chloe was waiting with a floaty shaped like a pineapple. "Your new throne, queen."

Maya climbed on, hair dripping bright orange trails down her neck, and actually laughed. Not the fake laugh she used when teachers made bad jokes, but real laughing, until her sides hurt.

"Whatever," she said, grinning so wide her cheeks ached. "This color's a whole mood anyway."

"A whole mood," Chloe agreed, paddling backward. "Now try not to fall off your throne, Your Majesty. I'm not rescuing you if you sink."

Maya tipped her head back, floating under the wide blue sky, orange hair spreading around her like wild fire. She'd missed three years of pool parties for nothing. The water felt like forgiveness, like starting over, like maybe eighth grade Maya wouldn't recognize high school Maya at all.

"Hey Orange Maya!" Taylor called from the diving board. "Chicken fight tournament—you and me versus Sam and Jazz?"

Maya paddled over, already planning her victory speech. She was going to destroy them. Obviously.
