Orange Glow in Zombie Land
Maya's thumb hovered over the iphone screen, heart racing as she stalked yet again through Clara's Instagram. She'd been cyber-spying for weeks, watching the senior's life unfold in perfectly curated posts—parties where Clara glowed like the sun, friends who looked like they'd stepped out of a magazine, moments that made Maya's own existence feel gray and small.
At school, everyone moved like zombies—shuffling through hallways, eyes glued to screens, dead to the world around them. Maya felt like she was the only one actually seeing things, which was both a blessing and a curse. Being observant meant noticing details, like how Clara always wore that orange hair tie during exams, or how she'd pause by the library graffiti every Tuesday.
The graffiti had appeared mysteriously over spring break—a sphinx painted in shimmering colors on the library wall, its riddle written beneath: "What breaks when spoken?"
Maya had spent weeks pondering it, writing possibilities in her journal until the pages bled with ink. Then came the day she found Clara standing there, tracing the sphinx's painted wings with gentle fingers.
"Silence," Maya whispered before she could stop herself.
Clara turned, orange hair tie bright against dark hair. "What?"
"The riddle. It's silence."
Clara's surprised smile transformed her face from distant to real. "I've been coming here for weeks, and you're the first person who actually noticed it was a riddle. Everyone else just treats it like... like it's part of the scenery."
"Like zombies," Maya said, then immediately regretted it. But Clara laughed.
"Exactly. Like zombies." She extended a hand. "I'm Clara."
"Maya."
"Want to help me figure out what it means?" Clara asked. "Maybe whoever painted it left more clues."
As they walked together, Maya's iphone buzzed forgotten in her pocket. For once, she wasn't spying on Clara's life from the outside. She was living it, right in the center of the orange glow that made everything else fade away.
