Orange Fox Theory

Maya stared at the orange gummy vitamin on her palm. Her mom swore these "teen glow" supplements would fix everything — her skin, her mood, her entire sophomore year existence. She swallowed it without water, already running late for first period.

In the hallway, Jessica Chen leaned against her locker like she owned the building. Orange hair — vibrant, unnatural, perfect — cascaded over her leather jacket. Everyone called Jessica "the fox" behind her back, half admiration, half resentment. She moved through high school like she'd already graduated.

"You coming to Lily's party tonight?" asked Theo, nudging Maya's shoulder. His golden retriever, Buster, usually followed him to school but today stayed home. Theo and Buster were a package deal — loyal, straightforward, everyone's first choice when it came to lab partners or weekend plans.

"Probably not," Maya said, adjusting her backpack. "I've got that history project due."

"You always have an excuse." Theo wasn't being mean, just honest. "Maya, you can't hide forever."

She walked to class thinking about how high school was basically a vitamin nobody asked for — supposed to be good for you, mostly just hard to swallow.

At lunch, Maya watched Jessica from across the cafeteria. The orange-haired fox sat with seniors, laughing at inside jokes, perfectly at ease in her skin. Something shifted inside Maya — not a dramatic epiphany, more like a tiny click.

That afternoon, she stopped at the drugstore. Bought a bottle of temporary hair dye. Electric orange.

Her mom freaked. "Maya, what did you DO?"

"It's not permanent," Maya said, studying herself in the bathroom mirror. The orange was ridiculous. It was bold. It was nothing she'd ever done before.

When she showed up to school Monday, Theo's jaw dropped. Jessica Chen actually smiled across the hallway. And Maya — Maya felt like she'd finally swallowed something real.
