Orange Fox Summer

Maya's phone buzzed. Third notification from Riley about the End of Summer Bash tonight.

"u coming???"

Maya stared at her reflection. Hair the same boring brown. Same frizzy mess she'd been rocking since forever. While Riley posted thirst traps with captions like "summer glow check" and accidentally-called-her-hot Tyler slid into her DMs.

Maya grabbed the orange Kool-Aid dye from her bathroom counter. Her sister's old experiment from eighth grade. The label warned: "May cause unexpected results."

Perfect.

Twenty minutes later, Maya stared at her reflection. It wasn't orange. It was ORANGE. Like, traffic cone meets highlighter pen meets radioactive Cheeto. Riley would lose it. Tyler would probably finally notice her, but not in the way she wanted.

She almost washed it out. Almost reached for the harsh shampoo her mom kept buying—some expensive stuff with pearl extract and vitamin E complex that promised to "repair and rejuvenate." Her mom was obsessed with wellness culture now. Every morning: a multivitamin, collagen powder, green juice routine. Like if she consumed enough vitamins, she'd stop aging.

Maya's hand hovered over the shampoo bottle.

Then she thought about Riley's perfect hair. Tyler's perfect everything. How she'd spent all summer trying to be someone she wasn't—someone who knew the right slang, wore the right crop tops, pretended to care about "aesthetic" whatever that meant.

Her phone lit up again. Tyler. Actually messaging her.

"hey, u going tonight?"}

Maya's heart did that stupid flutter thing. Then she noticed something—a gray fox emoji in his Instagram bio. Weirdly specific. Unless...

She searched "what does fox emoji mean" and nearly choked.

It meant he was gay. Or bi. Or figuring it out. The fox was lowkey code in their school's LGBTQIA+ group—someone had started using it last spring after GSA, and it stuck. Not everyone knew. Only if you were paying attention.

Maya stared at her orange hair in the mirror. Startling. Unmistakable. Not hiding.

Her phone buzzed. "riley says ur hair looks sick btw"

Maya smiled. Maybe she wouldn't blend in tonight. Maybe that was the point.

She grabbed her favorite oversized hoodie and left the orange hair exactly as it was. Traffic cone vibes and all.

Some vitamins you take for your body. Others you discover yourself, when you finally stop trying to fix everything that makes you different.

Tonight, Maya was done fixing herself.
