Orange Fox Season
The orange hair wasn't my choice — thank you, Sun-In and sixteen-year-old judgment — but it became my entire personality. At least according to everyone at Northwood High.
"Hey, Orange Fox," Marco called from his locker. "Stalking Jax's IG again?"
I flipped him off, cheeks burning. My orange hair plus my habit of accidentally lurking had earned me that nickname freshman year. Two years later, it still stuck like glitter on craft day.
The truth? I WAS spying on Jax's socials. But not in a creepy way. Okay, maybe a little creepy. But he'd posted something weird at 2 AM — a cryptic story that said "The fox knows" — and now I was spiraling. What fox? Who knew? Was this about me? The universe? THE ECONOMY?
My best friend Priya rolled her eyes as I obsessed at lunch. "You're reading too much into it. Jax is a himbo, not a riddle-master."
"Himbos can be enigmatic!" I protested, scrolling through his feed for the forty-third time that day. "Look! He posted an orange filter on his selfie yesterday. THAT'S MY COLOR."
"Your color is a mistake," Priya said. "And also, he probably just liked the filter. Not everything is a signal."
But I couldn't shake it. The orange filter. The fox reference. The way he'd looked at me in chemistry when my hair caught the light. Something was happening. I was DECODING this mystery like my life depended on it.
Three days later, Jax approached me after school, all nervous energy and drumming fingers.
"Hey, Orange Fox," he said, and I practically stopped breathing. "I, uh, wanted to ask you something."
"THE FOX KNOWS WHAT?" I blurted, way too loud.
He stared at me. "What?"
"Your story! 'The fox knows' — what does it mean? IS IT A CODE?" I was spiraling. I was SOON-to-be single and I hadn't even gotten the relationship yet.
Jax started laughing. Not mean laughing. GENUINE laughing. "Dude. My little sister was playing with my phone. She saw your orange hair in my friends list and said you looked like a fox. That's it. There's no code."
Oh. OH.
"But..." I stammered. "The orange filter?"
"I just thought it looked cool," he said, then got quiet. "But I was kinda hoping you'd notice. That's why I didn't take it down."
My heart did that thing where it forgets how to rhythm properly. "You wanted ME to notice?"
"Yeah," Jax rubbed the back of his neck, turning slightly pink. "I think your hair's actually pretty sick. And I was wondering if you wanted to get boba sometime?"
Marco walked by just then. "Orange Fox getting game? Finally!"
I didn't even flip him off. Some mysteries are better when you don't decode them yourself. Sometimes the universe just... orange-fox-kinda works out.
