Orange Fizz and First Periods
Maya's stomach did gymnastics as she walked toward Room 207. First day of freshman year, and she was already three minutes late. The hallway chaos didn't help—seniors looking like they owned the place, eighth graders wandering like lost ducks, and everywhere that unmistakable new school smell.
"Sorry I'm late," she breathed, sliding into her seat. Mr. Henderson didn't even look up. But then HER eyes locked onto Maya's.
Chloe. The Chloe. The one who'd gotten highlights in seventh grade and somehow made varsity cheer as a freshman. The one whose Instagram stories made Maya's life look like a documentary on boredom.
Chloe was staring. At Maya's backpack. Where her water bottle had leaked—again.
"Nice spill," Chloe whispered, actually smiling. Not mean-girl smiling. Real smiling. "What is that stuff anyway?"
Maya felt her face burning hotter than a bad sunburn. "It's this vitamin water thing. My mom's obsessed with wellness. She thinks if I drink enough of it, I'll magically become productive."
"Orange flavored?" Chloe raised an eyebrow. "That's bold. Most people stick to strawberry or something basic."
"It tastes like someone dissolved a Flintstones vitamin in sunkist soda," Maya admitted, and then they were both laughing. Actual laughing. In first period. With CHLOE.
But something shifted then. Because Maya realized the girl she'd built up in her head—the flawless, untouchable Instagram goddess—was just sitting there with orange vitamin water stains on her own backpack, laughing at bad-tasting wellness drinks.
"I'm Chloe," she said.
"Maya."
"Want to sit together at lunch?" Chloe asked, and it wasn't weird. It wasn't the beginning of some makeover montage or Mean Girls situation. It was just... two people realizing that sometimes the stuff we think makes us different is just the orange fizzy water everyone's too embarrassed to admit they secretly like.
