Orange Crush Fridays

Maya's hands trembled as she held the box of neon orange dye. Her bathroom mirror reflected someone tired of blending in—someone ready to be seen.

"You sure about this?" her best friend Riley texted, the notification lighting up her iPhone screen like a tiny concerned moon.

Maya typed back: "Been invisible since seventh grade, Riles. Time to go nuclear."

Forty minutes later, she emerged from the bathroom with hair that screamed highlighter orange—the kind of orange that made people stop in hallways, the kind that said *I am here whether you like it or not*.

Monday morning, the cafeteria went silent as she walked in. Maya's stomach did backflips. Then someone snorted. Within minutes, her hair was all over Snapchat—labeled "Carrot Temple May-a" and "Cheeto Head."

She hid in the bathroom, iPhone battery draining as she doomscrolled through the memes. Maybe orange hair wasn't brave. Maybe it was just a mistake.

Then she heard someone crying in the stall next door.

"You okay?"

It was Chase—THE Chase, sophomore class president, perfect GPA, flawless Instagram aesthetic. Except she wasn't flawless right now. She was sobbing.

"Everyone thinks my life is perfect," Chase choked out. "But my parents are splitting up and I haven't slept in three days and—"

And suddenly Maya got it. The orange hair wasn't about attention. It was about *authenticity*. About stopping the performance.

"Hey," Maya said, sliding her phone under the stall door. "Wanna see something truly tragic?"

Chase's laughter echoed through the bathroom as they watched Maya's hair fail compilation together.

That afternoon, Chase posted a photo of them both—Maya with her neon orange waves, Chase with no makeup, red eyes, real smile. Caption: *My beautiful disaster friends.*

Maya's orange hair still got stares. But now, when people looked, she didn't look away. Neither did they.
