Orange Crush & Cat Whiskers

Maya's phone buzzed at 2:47 AM. Another text from Kai: u up? Being the absolute zombie she was after pulling an all-nighter for chem finals, Maya groaned and flopped onto her pillow. Her cat, Barnaby, a chunky tabby with attitude, jumped onto her stomach like he owned the place.

"Dude, get off," Maya muttered, but Barnaby just purred louder, kneading her stomach like it was artisan dough.

Outside her window, the streetlights painted everything in this weird orange glow. That's when it hit her—she'd been sleepwalking through high school like a zombie, barely present, just going through motions. Kai wanted to hang because he'd noticed she'd been ghosting everyone since spring break.

Maya sat up, Barnaby sliding into her lap with a soft oof. She stared at her reflection—dark circles, hair in a messy bun, looking like a poster child for burnout. But then she spotted that bottle of orange hair dye she'd bought months ago and never had the guts to use.

"Why not?" she whispered.

Three hours later, Maya's hair was a vibrant tangerine masterpiece. Barnaby watched with judgment from the bathroom counter, his tail flicking like a metronome. When Maya walked into first period, silence spread like ripples in a pond. Kai's jaw actually dropped.

"Wild," he said, grinning. "Love it. You look... alive."

And for the first time in months, Maya actually felt it. Not like a zombie going through motions, but like someone who could surprise herself, take up space, maybe even be happy. Barnaby would definitely approve—he was all about living your best cat life.
