Orange Crush at the Pool

The summer heat hung thick and heavy as I stepped onto the padel court, my heart doing that nervous flutter thing that happens when your crush is literally ten feet away. My best friend Bear—200 pounds of linebacker energy with a surprisingly gentle serve—passed me a racquet with that grin that said I got this, even when I definitely didn't.

Bear's nickname had stuck since seventh grade when he'd hibernated through winter break playing FIFA, but now he was basically the social glue of our friend group. The kind of guy who'd text you at 2 AM just to send a meme and ask if you're okay.

"You're overthinking it again," Bear said, handing me an orange Gatorade from his backpack. "Just hit the ball. Don't calculate the physics of it."

Easy for him to say. Bear wasn't trying to impress Maya, who was currently poolside in this bright orange swimsuit that made his brain malfunction every time he looked in her direction. She was laughing at something Tyler said—Tyler, who had that effortless cool that came naturally to some people and required actual effort from others.

The padel game started, and somehow I was partnered against Tyler and his crew. Every time I missed a shot, I felt the heat rise in my cheeks. Meanwhile, Maya was watching from the pool, sipping something that matched her orange swimsuit, and I was so distracted I tripped over my own feet.

Face plant onto the court. The ball rolled away. Tyler's crew erupted in laughter, and honestly? I wanted to dissolve into the pavement.

But then something shifted. Maya stood up from her pool chair and walked over.

"That was kind of badass," she said, extending a hand. "Most people would've quit after that."

Later that night, floating in the pool with an orange slice balanced on my forehead like some ridiculous crown, Bear paddled over beside me.

"See? You survived," he said. "And Maya thinks you're badass now. That's a win."

The pool echoed with genuine laughter, the kind that feels different when it's not at your expense. For the first time all summer, the crushing weight of trying to be cool lifted. Sometimes the most embarrassing moments become the ones that actually matter, and sometimes an orange slice crown is exactly what you need to realize you don't have to prove anything to anyone.
