Orange Crush at the Pool
Maya's stomach did backflips as she stood by the community pool, clutching her orange Gatorade like it was a lifeline. Her crush, Jake, was there. So was his entire friend group. And so was Sierra, whose Instagram stories made Maya's life look like a grayscale documentary.
"Yo Maya!" Jake waved from the padel court. "We need a fourth! You down?"
Padel. The sport everyone played at summer parties. Maya had never even touched a racket, but saying no wasn't an option. Not when Jake's smile hit her like a sunbeam.
"Yeah, totally!" she called back, her voice cracking slightly. Sierra rolled her eyes. Of course.
The game was chaos. Maya's swings were wild, her coordination nonexistent. But when she finally connected with the ball, sending it soaring over the net, the group erupted. Jake high-fived her. His touch lingered.
"Natural," he grinned. "We should play again."
Sierra scoffed. "She got lucky."
"Whatever," Maya shot back, surprising herself. "Skill gap is real though, huh?"
The group went silent. Then Jake laughed. "Savage." But he was smiling at Maya.
Later, they ended up in the pool together. The water was perfect, cool against summer heat. They swam to the deep end, treading water as the party blurred around them.
"Sorry about Sierra," Jake said. "She's been salty since you transferred here."
Maya's heart raced. "Jealous?"
"Maybe." He splashed water at her. "Or maybe she's just threatened. You're... different."
"Different how?"
Jake considered this. "Real. Most people here are just playing a part. You're not."
The orange Gatorade sat abandoned on the pool deck. Maya wasn't nervous anymore. She was just Maya, and apparently, that was enough.
"Wanna get padel crushed again tomorrow?" he asked.
"Only if you promise to go easy on me."
"No promises." His smile widened. "But I will bring orange Gatorade. Your lucky color."
Maya floated on her back, staring at the sky. First day of summer. First time she felt like she belonged. And definitely not the last time she'd play padel terribly just to make Jake laugh.
